After an eight year absence The Sims is returning to consoles. Yes, The Sims 4, which PC owners have been playing for three years, is finally coming to Xbox One and PS4 this week, giving console gamers the chance to create their own sims and control every aspect of their lives
To help you get off to a great start and have the most fun possible, here are five top Sims 4 tips and cheats.

Experiment with new features

It’s likely that you haven’t played The Sims 4 before, so you may feel daunted by the wealth of new features presented to you. Build Mode now has a new, slightly confusing layout, and includes architectural stuff you might have never heard of before, like spandrels (we’re still not sure what they are). But you don’t need to be an architectural genius right away – don’t bother with foundations, half-walls, columns and double-height front doors until you really know what you’re doing. In the meantime, you can even use some of The Sims 4’s pre-built, pre-furnished rooms to create yourself a liveable house and figure out the rest as you go!

Google is your friend

If you really want to be the kind of person who builds masterpiece houses that you wish you could live in yourself, there are two main things you should be doing. The first is checking out The Sims website, where people upload their builds and are rated on how good they are.
You can find inspiration here, from houses built entirely underwater to themed houses centred on one solid idea. Your second tip is to find free house blueprints on Google. It’s difficult to know how big rooms should be, so to make sure you don’t end up with a cavernous mansion, house plans are a really useful resource. Happy building!

Express yourself

The Sims games have always been about being able to create yourself (and your crush, and your best friend, and your best friend’s crush), but until now, the options have been pretty limited. Now, they’re greater than ever, whether you want to pick from the “Styled Looks” and pre-made faces to create a Sim you’re happy with, or use the Detail Edit mode to get everything exactly how you like it. There are also expanded gender options, more body types, and the ability to edit specific features independent of the rest of the face or body, so it’s even easier to build someone who looks just how you want them to.

Take advantage of moods

One of the biggest additions to The Sims 4 is Moods – based on their personality, their actions, and their surroundings, Sims will often be feeling some kind of Mood. This ranges from Flirty to Angry to Inspired and a whole bunch in between, and each Mood brings its own benefits or disadvantages that are worth paying attention to. When a Sim is Flirty, for example, flirt-related actions become available; when a Sim is Focused or Inspired, they can do better or faster work. Certain furniture and art can raise a certain Mood, so be sure to pay attention to your decor!

You’re not playing The Sims to get rich the old-fashioned way. We know what you want, and we’re here to help you out. Here are the best cheats:

  • kaching/rosebud: Adds 1,000 Simoleons to your household funds.
  • motherlode: Adds 50,000 Simoleons to your household funds
  • sims.modify_funds + XXX: Adds the specified amount of funds (for example, if you’re just short a few Simoleons but you really need that new fridge).
  • resetsim [Sim name]: Resets your Sim, with full needs, removing all the bad Moodlets and whatever else is wrong with your Sim.
  • FreeRealEstate on: Do this one on the Neighbourhood screen before you buy a house and ALL HOUSES WILL BE FREE. Of course, once you’re moved in, things cost money again.
  • objects.consumables_infinite_toggle true: It’s a long one, but this one makes all consumable items in the household (food, potions, etc.) unlimited. Saves a lot of money and time!
  • sims.modify_in_cas: If you’re dissatisfied with your Sims’ looks but you can’t do anything about it, this cheat will let you go back to the beginning and tweak their face as much as you like.
  • stats.set_skill_level [1-10]: Learning skills the old-fashioned way is boring and time-consuming. Just set everything to 10! Life’s too short!
  • death.toggle: The ultimate cheat: turn off death.
